CHARLESTON — U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced Tuesday he will donate his salary during the partial government shutdown to food banks based in West Virginia.
Wednesday will mark the 19th day of the shutdown as President Donald Trump and congressional leaders remain unable to reach a compromise regarding funding for border security; Trump has demanded $5.7 billion for a southern border wall.
According to Manchin, 340,000 West Virginians dependent on food stamps will go without services as the shutdown continues.
“This is unacceptable,” he said. “In West Virginia, we look out for one another and I know food banks across the state will be doing their best to fill this void. I applaud them for always stepping up to serve their communities.”
Manchin has pushed the 2013 bipartisan immigration bill as one solution for ending the shutdown.
