Jean Maynard Hoff, of Charleston, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Hubbard Hospice House, in Charleston.
She was born in Williamson on Dec. 2, 1929, the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Stella Maynard.
Jean graduated from Williamson High School in 1947. She received her BS in nursing from Alderson-Broaddus College in 1953, graduating with honors, while at AB she met her future husband, John Hoff, of Spencer. They married in 1955. Jean later received her manursing from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971.
Jean was a member of the West Virginia Nurses Association, American Nursing Association, Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honor Society, was associate professor emeritus of WVU School of Nursing and former member of Nursing Education Foundation of West Virginia.
Early in her marriage, Jean worked as a community health nurse in Washington, D.C. After relocating back to West Virginia, she taught nursing at AB College and at West Virginia Wesleyan College. For 22 years, she was on the faculty at WVU School of Nursing and also served as Assistant Dean. She was on WVU faculty at both Morgantown and Charleston campuses with a short period working at West Virginia State Health Department as director of Community health nursing in between.
While at WVU, along with her life-long colleague and friend, Dean of Nursing Lorita Jenab, Jean had a significant impact on nursing education in West Virginia. At WVU in Morgantown, she was the liaison for the West Virginia Association of Deans and Directors of Nursing Education. The goal of this association was to promote and develop more baccalaureate degree programs state-wide. This effort greatly increased the number of college degree programs available in West Virginia and insured consistency in the curriculum content, prerequisites and standards. Later at WVU in Charleston, Jean wrote the grant for development of the first outreach education via satellite, providing classroom nursing education to campuses all across the state.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Thomas Maynard and Stella Crum Maynard; her husband, John David Hoff; and by all seven of her siblings.
She is survived by her children, Susan Slack, of Charleston, Karen E. Hoff, of Charlotte, N.C., David T. Hoff (Francy), of Charlotte, and Douglas T. Hoff (Melodie), of Morehead, Ky.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
