MORGANTOWN — A three-vehicle accident sent three people to the hospital and closed both northbound lanes of Interstate 79 for hours on Friday morning.
The accident happened in the area of mile marker 151, which is just south of the Westover interchange, about 8 a.m., Deputy D. Stemple, of the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, said.
A 2006 Volkswagen Passat was traveling south on I-79 when it crossed the median and hit a 2018 Honda Odyssey and 2017 Hyundai Elantra causing heavy damage to all three vehicles, Stemple said. The engine of the Passat was torn from the vehicle and was in the median.
“The van [Odyssey] was not as bad as the others,” he said.
A woman from the Passat and a woman and child from the Elantra were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital with what Stemple described as non-life threatening injuries.
He said the driver Passat’s driver was at fault but it was too early in the investigation to consider charges.
Both lanes of traffic were closed until about noon while an accident reconstructionist took measurements and the wreck was cleared, Stemple said.
The names of those involved are not being released, he said.
