George Dale Cumpston, Jr., known by many in Morgantown on the radio airwaves for many years as “Bob Elliott”, passed away Thursday evening, December 13, 2018, at his home in Woodbine, Ky., at the age of 70, following a battle with cancer.
He was born on July 3, 1948, in Morgantown, a son of Betty Skotnicki, who survives him in Morgantown, and the late George Dale Cumpston, Sr.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Christina Cumpston, of Carmichaels, Pa.; a sister, Ann Cumpston, of Star City; his bonus children, Robert Baker and his wife, Dina, of Murrysville, Pa. and Catherine Smith and her husband, Jason, of Morgantown; seven grandchildren, Justina, Jeremy, Ryan, Zachary, David, Jordan, and Taylor; two nieces, Jessica Corbin, of Mt. Morris, Pa. and Shannon Chioffe, of Bradenton, Fla.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great niece; additionally, he is survived by his longtime companion and caregiver, Argene Bowskill, of Woodbine, Ky.
George was a 1967 graduate of University High School. He played drums for and sang with various local bands and loved music, particularly doo-wop and oldies. His love of music lead him to a career in radio that spanned more than two decades at local radio stations WCLG and WMQC. He was known for being half of the “Bob and Bob Show” on WCLG and later had a morning show with his partner, Larry Nelson, at WMQC.
George loved the beach, which he retired to for several years, camping with his family, Sunday drives, and classic cars. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him, “Peeps”.
Friends may join George’s family to honor his life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave, Westover, from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 19. At 7 p.m. a celebration of his life will be led by his longtime friend and radio partner, Larry Nelson to conclude the evening visitation.
Although there will be no formal funeral service at George’s request, friends and family are asked to gather at the funeral home by 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, at which time a procession will leave for Lawnwood Cemetery.
