MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — University High safety/receiver Amir Richardson decommitted from West Virginia on Friday a result of the Mountaineers pulling his scholarship offer less than two weeks before the early signing period.
Richardson announced the move on Twitter:
“After a long talk with Coach [Dana] Holgorsen I will no longer be attending West Virginia University and my recruitment is now 100% open.”
West Virginia coaches had told Richardson he projects as an outside linebacker in college. He told The Dominion Post that the Mountaineers pulled the offer and Holgorsen said “I wasn’t a Division I talent on defense and that they had enough receivers.
“I just want to find a new home at this point. Life goes on, I gotta find a new school.”
Richardson committed to the Mountaineers on July 29.
His father, Tony Sr., was a two-year starter for the Mountaineers in the early ’90s.
Faced with re-opening his recruitment, Richardson holds offers Air Force, Army, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Marshall, Nevada, Temple and Yale.
As a senior this season for the Hawks (5-5), Richardson had 45 tackles including five for loss. At receiver, he made 29 catches for 527 yards and seven touchdowns. He also ran for 336 yards and four touchdowns.
