Ruth Barger

Ruth Josephine “Jo” Kisner Barger, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on November 19, 2018, surrounded by her family. She fought a long and courageous battle with an extended illness.
She was born in Terra Alta,  on the fourth of July, 1930, and enjoyed many Independence Day parades in her hometown with family and friends. She was the daughter of Leola Mae Brenneman and Lester Daily Kisner.
She was preceded in death by both parents and her husband, Carl C. Barger, MD.
Growing up, Jo attended the Methodist Church in Terra Alta,  and later was married there to her husband, Carl, on June 1, 1954. As anyone who had the great fortune to spend any time with Jo will attest to her friendliness and sincere kindly demeanor, it was no surprise that she would be awarded the Miss Congeniality Award in her senior year of high school. Upon high school graduation, Jo enrolled in West Virginia University’s Medical Technology program graduating with a bachelor’s degree.
She was a devoted, loving mother and homemaker. She enjoyed tending her garden, sewing, cooking, square dancing, WVU sports, and volunteered as a driver for the Monongalia County Meals on Wheels for many years. As her husband used to say with deep fondness and affection, “Jo dearly loves growing things.” Her personality was brimming with hospitality and unconditional generosity to all who shared her home.
She is survived by her daughter, Karla Jo Barger, of Morgantown; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Cathy Barger, of Morgantown; and half-sister and husband, Carol Ann Kisner and David McGraw, of Westover.
Family and friends will be received at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 2 – 4 p.m.  Friday, Nov. 23.  A graveside service will be held  at Oak Grove Cemetery, in Terra Alta, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24.
