Preston County 4-H club ends long-time recycling service project

REEDSVILLE — After more than 20 years of helping with recycling the second Saturday of each month in Valley District, the Mount Vernon Climbers 4-H Club is taking a break.
Club Leader Debbie Wilhelm said it was the group’s community service project. But recently, 4-Hers found hypodermic needles at the recycling drop-off point in Reedsville, and water and ice that accumulate at the site are an issue, Wilhelm said.
“We are going to miss all those who recycle and have been so supportive of our club,” Wilhelm said. “But we have a very young group of 4-Hers now, and the leaders are getting older, so we feel we need to find a new service project that our 4-Hers can participate in.”
Folks who pulled up regularly for the 4-H members to help carry their recyclables to the bins became like friends, Wilhelm said.
The recycling is sponsored by the Preston County Solid Waste Authority. SWA Board Amanda Pitzer said the board is trying to find a way to continue recycling in Valley District.
“There’s a big need. People have been taking their recyclables there for a long time,” Pitzer said.
Any group interested in helping with recycling should call SWA Board Member Don Smith at 304-282-9334.
