MORGANTOWN – Monongalia County remained second among the 55 counties for early voting turnout, according to figures released Monday by the secretary of state.
Total Mon County turnout for the early voting period of Oct. 24-Nov. 3 was 13,403 – just behind Kanawha’s 16,361.
By party, Mon’s turnout fell like this: Democrats, 6,813; Republicans, 4,078; no party affiliation, 2,256; Libertarians, 47; Mountain Party, 18; “other,” 191.
The statewide early voting turnout was 174,506. Along party lines, it fell: Democrats, 76,819; Republicans, 65,032; no party, 25,522; Libertarians, 438; Mountain Party, 129; other, 6,566.
Preston County’s turnout was 2,609, including 769 Democrats and 1,368 Republicans.
Marion’s turnout was 4,071, including 2,326 Democrats and 1,018 Republicans.
The secretary also released absentee voting numbers for the same period. Statewide, 8,699 voters filed absentee ballots. Mon saw 257 absentee votes, including 141 Democrats and 70 Republicans; Preston, 86, including 34 Democrats and 43 Republicans; Marion, 355, including 231 Democrats and 85 Republicans.
Secretary of State Mac Warner commented, “I’m extremely pleased that so many West Virginians took advantage of early voting. Numbers significantly exceed the 2002 through 2014 General Elections. This impressive turnout and the smooth execution of the early voting procedures are a direct reflection on the detailed preparations by the clerks and their staff.”
Polls are open on Tuesday, Election Day, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
