Applications open for Community Arts Grant for 2019

MORGANTOWN — Applications are being taken for the Community Arts Grant for 2019. The application deadline is Jan. 11.

The grant, recently announced by Arts Monongahela and Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia Inc., is a continuous effort to support area art organizations and ensure a variety of cultural programs are available in the community. It includes funding support from the Monongalia County Commission, the City of Morgantown and private donors.

In 2018, the program awarded $195,000 in grants to 11 local arts and cultural organizations.

The Community Arts Grant program provides funding for community-based arts-related organizations and projects. In 2018, projects included theater programming for children, Arts Walk and other public art initiatives.

“The 2018 process worked really well. We were able to increase funding, streamline and professionalize the process and fund new organizations and projects,” said Jack Thompson, president of the Arts Mon Board of Directors.

The mission of Community Arts Grant Program is to broaden base support for the arts, promote excellence in the arts and ensure the community has a variety of arts programs. The grant structure and criteria were developed by a committee of community volunteers, with representation from individual artists and arts organizations.

“Each year, YCF receives many worthy arts grant requests, but resources are limited,” said Patty Showers Ryan, president of YCF. “Our goal is to increase funding for local art organizations while growing endowment funds for longterm sustainability.”

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations with arts-related projects within Monongalia County are eligible to apply. The grant application can be reached online at ycfwv.org/arts-fund-grants/.
