Morgantown 13th, University 14th in latest WVSSAC football playoff ratings

MORGANTOWN — The point totals for Morgantown and University in the latest WVSSAC football playoff ratings, released Tuesday, are locked in, though their position  could change with one more week of the regular season remaining.

The Mohigans, coming off a 55-10 win against the Hawks in the Mohawk Bowl, finished with 72 total points for 13th, while UHS is right behind them with 71 points in 14th.

As it stands, MHS (5-5) will travel to Musselman to take on the Applemen (8-1) in the first round, a rematch from a game that saw a 13-7 Musselman win. UHS (5-5) will head south to take on Capital (8-1), a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal game that saw the Cougars advance to the semis.

However, this could change based on how Greenbrier East and Hurricane perform Friday night.

Greenbrier East (62 points) will host Riverside and with a win, would gain 12 base points plus a bonus point, which would push the Trojans past UHS and MHS with 75 total points.

Hurricane (60 points) plays at St. Albans and would earn 12 base points, but no bonus points since St. Albans hasn’t defeated a Class AAA opponent. That would put the Redskins and Mohigans at a tie at 72, so the tiebreaker will be whichever team has the most bonus points.

Right now, MHS has the advantage, 18-15.

But a Hurricane win would put it ahead of UHS, so a win for both Greenbrier East and Hurricane would guarantee the Hawks the 16th and final seed.

Martinsburg (10-0) tops the current rankings, followed by Spring Valley (9-0).

In Class A, the Cee-Bees (5-4) are not officially eliminated, but have the near impossible task of passing four teams during the final week.

C-B (36 points) will face Madonna on the road and a win would net it six points and three bonus points to finish at 45 total. The No. 16 seed, Fayetteville, has 46 points, so the Cee-Bees will need help with additional bonus points – wins by defeated opponents.

But in order for anything to matter, Fayetteville, Tyler Consolidated, Pocahontas County and Tygarts Valley all need to lose for C-B to have a prayer.
