Ask University senior quarterback Logan Holgorsen to describe teammate Evan Parow, and his answer will be short and sweet.
“He’s great. He’s a great player, a great friend, a great role model to a lot of people,” Holgorsen said. “I love him to death. I’d go to war with that dude.”
It seems as if recently, though, most battles the pair fights together are more one-sided slaughters than wars, and Friday night was no different as Parow hauled in seven receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns as the Hawks defeated visiting Preston 50-0.
“I run the routes I’m supposed to, and from there it’s all about how the defense plays on me,” Parow said. “The defense was pressed up on me all night, and that made it really easy for me to get open deep.”
The Knights kept man coverage on the opposing receiving corps this evening, but were outmanned by the athletic Hawks’, opening the door for a yet another big performance from the dynamic UHS duo.
“It’s difficult to defend against that type of talent, especially when you’re playing freshman and sophomores,” PHS coach Johnathan Tennant said. “We made some big stops, and I’m real proud of the defensive effort, but the bottom line is they have more athletes than we do.”
“It’s pretty amazing,” said UHS coach John Kelley regarding Holgorsen and Parow’s performance.
“If you’re going to focus on Amir Richardson, Parow is going to be open. Evan’s been the benefactor of that all season.”
According to Holgorsen, it’s a bit more than just the double coverage on Richardson that sets the stage for ‘The Parow Show.’ Holgorsen attributes a lot of effort and time to the connection the two have developed — a connection that has accounted for 1,092 yards and 19 touchdowns for the Hawks this season.
“When we figured out we were coming over here, he was ready to work. He loves to work, and we have a really good relationship off the field,” he said. “He’s very gifted, and he’s underrated.”
That relationship off the field, which carries over to the gridiron so well, manifests based upon one simple principle — trust.
“He has trust in me, and I have trust in him. He trusts me to get open and come down with the ball when he throws it to me, and it’s nice to have a quarterback that I can trust will make the right read and the get ball to the right person,” Parow said. “If you don’t trust in each other, you’re not going to get that timing right. You’re not going to have that connection.”
Most certainly, Holgorsen is appreciative of that connection.
“It’s unbelievable. I just throw that thing up there and he goes and gets it,” Holgorsen said. “I’m blessed to have him.”
