Prep roundup: MHS currently in eighth place after first day of state golf tournament

WHEELING — After the first day of the West Virginia state golf tournament, George Washington High currently leads class AAA with a score of 221, Grafton leads class AA with a score of 233 and Wheeling Central High Catholic High leads class A with a score of 246.
Morgantown High does currently sit in eighth place in the class AAA standings with a score of 262 — with Jack Wiedebusch shooting an 86, Carter Kline and Jack Hudson with a score of 88 and Andy Seman with a score of 98.
Individually, George Washington’s Joseph Kalaskey leads class AAA with a score of 70, Robert C. Byrd High’s Jimmy Hawkins leads class AA with a score of 73 and Wheeling Central’s Derrick Harrison leads class A with a score of 75.
Preston High School’s Caleb Osborne is currently tied for sixth with a score of 76 and Luke Livengood is currently tied for 29th place and with a score of 87 in class AAA. Trinity Christian School’s Mark Spruill currently is tied for eleventh place in class A with a score of 88.
The tournament will continue today at 7:30 a.m. at Oglebay Resort.

Girls’ soccer

FAIRMONT — University High’s girls’ soccer team took care of business on the road by routing Fairmont Senior High 4-0.
The Hawks struck early and never looked back after Tristen Bright found the back of the net just three minutes into the game. That wasn’t Bright’s only goal either, she would also score her second of the game in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Ari Christiansen and Eva Bridges added goals for UHS (13-2-1). Lizzy Edwards had five saves in the win as well.
The Hawks will play again at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at home against Buckhannon-Upshur.

Volleyball

John Marshall 0
University High’s volleyball had no trouble with John Marshall High on Tuesday winning in three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 27-25.
Lauren Huggins led the way for the Hawks with 24 assists, Ashten Boggs provided 14 kills and Olivia Kaddar had 12 kills.
UHS (13-4) will play again at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Morgantown High.
