Who wins between West Virginia and Texas Tech? Staff picks

The MetroNews/Dominion Post Sports staff has crushed its West Virginia picks through three weeks, going 13-2 against the spread. So take caution with our predictions this time as West Virginia (-3.5) visits Texas Tech:

Allan Taylor

Like flour tortillas carried by the West Texas wind, this game requires some meat in the middle to be worthwhile. Sure,
the skill players will churn up highlights aplenty, but I’m thinking the outcome hinges upon short-yardage plays … and I like West Virginia’s defensive front to do as it did against K-State by stoning Tech in a key moment. They’ll preserve the lead for Grier & Co.
West Virginia 40, Texas Tech 33

Allan’s other picks:

Ohio State 34, Penn State 30
Notre Dame 28, Stanford 24
Virginia Tech 23, Duke 17
Washington 35, BYU 16
Marshall 35, Western Kentucky 28

Kyle Wiggs

Texas Tech stunning victory on the road at Oklahoma State made the league take notice, but the Mountaineers are playing too well offensively to slip in this one. It’s impressive that the Tech coaching staff has again prepared a young quarterback to have immediate success, but WVU’s veterans on offense will be the difference here.

West Virginia 38, Texas Tech 34

Kyle’s other picks:

Ohio State 27, Penn State 24
Notre Dame 27, Stanford 21
Virginia Tech 24, Duke 13
Washington 28, BYU 14
Marshall 24, Western Kentucky 21

Brad Howe

Every year it seems as if the theme of this game is the high powered offenses. And yet, the teams have combined to score only 67 points per game in the six meetings as Big 12 members. Tony Gibson’s crew allowed just one touchdown pass from Pat Mahomes two seasons ago, and last year shutout the Red Raiders in the fourth quarter. Give me the under again this year as West Virginia improves to 4-0.
West Virginia 38, Texas Tech 27

Brad’s other picks:

Ohio State 38, Penn State 31
Notre Dame 28, Stanford 24
Duke 24, Virginia Tech 21
Washington 24, BYU 20
Marshall 31, Western Kentuckyy 24

Goose Gyorko

West Virginia visiting Lubbock is the Big 12 version of the Shrug Emoji. In 2012, Texas Tech blew the doors off a high flying WVU squad. In 2014, WVU won the game on a Field Goal at the gun. In 2016, WVU repaid the 2012 blowout by beating the Red Raiders by 31. Safe to say that any outcome is in play. A win on Saturday should put WVU on a path to enter November undefeated and inside the Top 10 nationally. This is where having the best QB in the conference is supposed to be the difference.
West Virginia 51, Texas Tech 37

Goose’s other picks:

Penn State 30, Ohio State 28
Notre Dame 27, Stanford 17
Virginia Tech 24, Duke 20
Washington 31, BYU 20
Marshall 42, Western Kentucky 23

Hoppy Kercheval

The last thing the Mountaineers needed was for Texas Tech to pick up momentum with a huge road win last weekend at Ok State. The nation’s top offense, a defense that just shut down the gun-slinging Gundys, and a rejuvenated Lubbock crowd will give the Mountaineers their stiffest challenge to date. However, go with the experienced Will Grier over true freshman Texas Tech QB Alan Bowman and Gibby’s defense will make just enough plays to win the day.
West Virginia 45, Texas Tech 38

Hoppy’s other picks:

Ohio State 37, Penn State 31
Notre Dame 31, Stanford 23
Duke 24, Virginia Tech 21
Washington 27, BYU 17
Marshall 34, Western Kentucky 30
