Clay-Battelle beats Calhoun County, 14-8

MOUNT ZION — Despite Calhoun County closing school Friday because of flooding, the Clay-Battelle football team still headed down and came home with a 14-8 win over Calhoun County.
The field wasn’t a muddy mess, but Cee-Bees (3-2) head coach Ryan Wilson did say it was wet and the grass was extraordinarily long. Still, C-B’s defense held strong throughout and the offense scored when it mattered the most.
“It was a total team effort, defense came up with four turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles,” Wilson said. “The defense kept coming up with stops and played very well when it mattered most.
“Offensively, we never turned the ball over with the wet field and that was huge. We kept plugging away, and the kids kept working hard at it.”
Behind 8-6 in the fourth quarter, the Cee-Bees prevented Calhoun from getting a punt away and took over deep in Red Devils’ territory. Hunter Brewer eventually scored the game-winning touchdown.
C-B will return home to face Paden City at 7 p.m. Friday.
