Radford men’s soccer team routs WVU 4-1

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s three-match win streak came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Radford on Tuesday night in men’s soccer action at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Previously winless, Radford (1-5) cranked up its offense early when Victor Valls found the back of the net within the first 10 minutes. Kieran Roberts scored a goal in the 17th minute, and Amadou Macky Diop rounded out Radford’s first-half onslaught by scoring in the 36th minute to take a 3-0 lead. The Highlanders weren’t done though. Diop got one more shot past the goalkeeper in the 56th minute to take a 4-0 lead.

The Mountaineers (5-4) were out-shot 18-11, while the Highlanders held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior defender Pascal Derwaritsch scored for West Virginia in the 57th minute, his team-leading fourth goal of the season, but it was too little too late for the Mountaineers.

“I thought that we were poor from the second I walked into the locker room pregame,” Mountaineers coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “This was not a West Virginia performance and it will be fixed, I can promise you that.”
