MORGANTOWN — University High School held its ninth annual Julie Foster Hawk Walk Friday afternoon, raising money for charity.
Students walked to support the Julie Foster Fund, an emergency fund created by Foster, a teacher at UHS, for faculty and staff who had urgent medical needs. Foster was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. She died in May 2013 at age 50.
The first Hawk Walk raised $15,000 to help with Foster’s medical expenses. The teacher gave some of the money back so her students could start a fund dedicated to helping UHS faculty in times of need.
The students split the proceeds every year between the Julie Foster Fund and another charitable or medical cause.
This year’s walk also raised money for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
In the past eight years, the walk has raised more than $55,000 for cancer, autism, diabetes and heart disease research, as well as flood relief efforts in West Virginia.
