MORGANTOWN — West Virginia has finalized its 2023 nonconference football schedule by adding FCS opponent Duquesne, athletics director Shane Lyons confirmed Thursday.
According to the game contract viewed through a public records request, the Mountaineers will pay Duquesne $425,000 for the Week 2 matchup on Sept. 9, 2023, and will provide the officiating crew.
West Virginia has committed to playing 11 Power 5 teams each regular season through 2024, a combination of the nine-game Big 12 round robin and two out-of-conference Power 5 opponents. The high-profile opponents include neutral-site games against Florida State and Tennessee, along with multi-year series against Penn State, Pitt, Maryland and Virginia Tech.
Based on such scheduling strength that’s a rarity among FBS programs, Lyons has said West Virginia plans to continue mixing in a guarantee game each year against an FCS opponent. Those have a regional flare with Youngstown State, James Madison and Eastern Kentucky visiting Morgantown.
