MORGANTOWN — Area nonprofit organizations were celebrated Friday at a garden party hosted by WVU President Gordon Gee at Blaney House.
In partnership with Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia (YCF), the gathering marked National Nonprofit Day and brought together 21 of the 29 agencies from five counties that are associated with YCF.
The party allowed community members to learn about the nonprofits and what they do.
In his opening remarks, Gee said the quality of life in West Virginia can’t be topped and he attributed that to those in attendance.
“You can’t have a great university without a great education system,” he said. “You can’t have a great city without great nonprofits. You can’t have great nonprofits without the work you all are doing.”
YCF covers Monongalia, Preston, Marion, Taylor and Harrison counties.
Foundation President Patty Showers Ryan said the mission is to promote philanthropy and build endowment funds to benefit those communities.
YCF manages such funds for the charitable organizations.
She pointed out that the 21 nonprofits in attendance combined for 910 continuous years of service, noting three in particular: the Morgantown Public Library with 92 years, the Shack Neighborhood House and Mountaineer Area Boy Scouts of American, both with 90 years each.
