Woman killed in UTV accident, driver charged with DUI resulting in death

KINGWOOD — A woman was killed in a UTV accident Saturday in Preston County, and her husband is charged with DUI resulting in death as the driver.
According to the West Virginia State Police, Brieanne Nicole Dietz was killed in an accident on Red Rock Road, in the Rowlesburg area, in the 4:05 p.m. accident. John David Dietz III, 28, of Albright, is charged with DUI resulting in death.
A UTV is a utility vehicle, similar to an all-terrain vehicle but with more seats. It is sometimes called a side-by-side.
Both State Police and a bystander administered aid to Brieanne Dietz, according to the criminal complaint by Senior Trooper L.S. Hall.
According to the complaint, Hall and Cpl. D.W. Simmons arrived on the scene of the single-vehicle accident within minutes of receiving the call.
They saw a bystander administering chest compressions to Brieanne Dietz. Hall “immediately grabbed his medical bag and began rescue breathing,” on her.
Hall and the bystander continued to attempt to resuscitate Dietz, but she succumbed to her injuries, the complaint said.
John Dietz refused a preliminary breath test and field sobriety tests, the complaint said, but admitted to having consumed alcoholic beverages before driving the UTV.
He had, “slurred speech, bloodshot eyes,” staggered, needed help walking and there was an odor of alcoholic beverages coming from him, according to the complaint.
Troopers found one empty Bud Light container underneath the vehicle and a cooler nearby with three unopened cans of beer inside.
John Dietz was free on $25,000 bond Monday. The investigation continues.
