MORGANTOWN — A book reading and party promoting the release of “55 Strong: Inside the West Virginia Teacher Strike” is set for 6-8 p.m. Friday at 123 Pleasant St.
The project from Belt covers the nine school-day teachers’ strike in February that sparked other education movements across the country.
Through firsthand essays and on-the-ground interviews and photographs, “55 Strong” examines the circumstances that led to the strike, the mechanics of the strike itself and how the West Virginia labor movement celebrated the outcome.
The book was edited by Jessica Salfia, a West Virginia public school teacher, Emily Hilliard, a West Virginia-based folklorist, and Elizabeth Catte, author of “What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia.
Ten percent of proceeds from the sale of the book will be given to West Virginia DonorsChoose projects, and all West Virginia teachers are eligible to receive a free copy.
