MORGANTOWN — Motown Taxi owner Andrew Vecchio confirmed that his company finalized the purchase of competitor Yellow Cab in late July.
In a statement to The Dominion Post, Vecchio explained, “Yes, we purchased Yellow Cab’s assets, including the license to operate taxi service … with the intention of improving public transportation in Monongalia County as well as the surrounding counties.”
Vecchio explained that all taxi drivers in West Virginia operate as independent contractors as mandated by the West Virginia Public Service Commission (PSC).
“We have offered every independent contractor that was previously leased with Yellow Cab the opportunity to drive with Motown Taxi if they wish,” Vecchio said.
He went on to say that Motown Taxi is also looking to bring several of the Yellow Cab dispatch employees into his company’s 24-hour dispatch center.
Motown Taxi was given approval to operate in Morgantown in 2015 by the PSC and began operations in early 2016.
Vecchio said Yellow Cab has operated in some form in the Morgantown area since 1942, though the company has changed hands multiple times.
“We will be maintaining the original license as it was part of the purchase,” Vecchio said.
The company will continue to operate under the name Motown Taxi.
He said the decision to acquire Yellow Cab “Is in the spirit of Motown Taxi; to provide quality transportation services with a modernized fleet of vehicles and the latest technologies available to provide the highest quality of service.”
