ST. ALBANS — If Morgantown Post 2 is going to win the state American Legion baseball championship, it will have to do it the hard way.
Post 2 fell behind Elkins Post 29, 5-0, after two innings Aug. 1 and never caught up. The 10-5 loss dropped Morgantown into the tourney’s loser’s bracket. If Post 2 wins out in the loser’s bracket, it will have to beat the champ of the winner’s bracket twice to take the tourney.
Post 2 starter Colton Matthews struggled, allowing 10 hits and four walks to account for eight runs in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Evan Smith gave up the other two runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Elkins collected 13 hits and five walks.
Cam Stoldt had three hits and an RBI for Post 2. Andrew Berry singled and walked twice, and drove in a run. Ethan Smith and Caleb Taylor had the other RBIs for Morgantown.
The state tournament continues today.
