MORGANTOWN — The WVU football program is set to welcome a number of high-level prospects to campus for its annual premier recruiting event of the summer.
That’s right, it’s Showtime.
Showtime is organized to bring the top prospects on the board to Morgantown to meet with the coaches, go over how they would be used in the scheme, try on jerseys and plenty more.
Since its inception, during the 2013 season, the program welcomed many top players to campus and landed some of them. Among those names are Dante Stills, Gary Jennings, Derrek Pitts, Kwantel Raines, Brendan Ferns, Kenny Robinson and a number of others.
This year will be no different. The Mountaineers are expected to bring some real talent to Morgantown in order to get a taste of Showtime.
A pair of four-stars in the secondary in Aliquippa, Pa., cornerback Marlin Devonshire and Philadelphia Imhotep Inst Charter School safety Tykee Smith headline the star power categories. Both players list the program among their top choices and are expected to make their college decisions in the coming weeks. Both are at positions of need for the program and would be a major boost to the growing 2019 recruiting class, which is now up to eight members.
Locally, University High School athlete Amir Richardson is set to announce his college choice Sunday, in front of family and friends, but is expected to get one last taste of WVU prior to that.
Richardson, 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, should be another of the prospects who make it, and he will have one last chance to speak to the coaches prior to picking a college home. Among his final choices are WVU, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech.
Capital athlete Kerry Martin is another in-state prospect who will make the trek up to Morgantown. His recruitment also seems to be coming to a close. The high school quarterback and Kennedy Award front runner is being recruited as a safety at the college level and the Mountaineers vaulted up his list after offering following a camp in June.
Martin is weighing options of WVU as well as Rutgers and hopes to have a college choice in August, but perhaps this weekend could serve as the push needed.
There’s expected to be upwards of 20 prospects on campus and this could lead to some movement in regard to commitments in the days after.
Lights, camera, Showtime in Morgantown and the stars will definitely be out.
