David J. Riggs, 83, of Morgantown, and more recently of Tampa, Fla., passed away July 3, 2018.
He was born April 4, 1935, a son of the late Claude and Mary M. (McBee) Riggs
David was a 1953 graduate of Morgantown High School. He was a proud Marine, serving his country from 1953-’56, and remained active in the Morgantown Marine Corps League and the Marine Corps Scholarship fund-raising golf tournaments in Tampa.
He worked for National Airlines in Washington, D.C., Mohawk Airlines in Syracuse, N.Y., and WVU Hospitals. He retired from Valley Comprehensive Community Mental Health in 1989, after working
16 years, then served on Valley’s Board of Directors from 1990-2000.
He was president of Jaycees in 1965 and he volunteered with Stepping Stones (formerly known as the Monongalia County Easter Seal Society) from 1970-2010 as a board member and treasurer.
David retired at 53 so he could pursue his love of golf. He was a member of The Pines Country Club in Morgantown and Carrollwood Country Club in Tampa. He played many courses including Pebble Beach in California, Wicklow Golf Club in Western Ireland, and Ladybank Golf Club in Firth, Scotland. David was a WVU fan all his life and loved watching WVU football and basketball. He was thankful to his lifelong friend Carroll Hoard for calling to remind him of the game dates and times so he wouldn’t miss a game.
He leaves behind his wife, Patricia Riggs; his daughter, Carol Keener; son-in-law, Bud “Forney” Keener; stepson, Nat Eichler; and niece, Claudia Paugh.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings, Margaret Ann Riggs, Marvin C. Riggs, Ralph Riggs and Robert Riggs.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation services have been provided.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home from 2-3 p.m. Thursday, July 26, with the memorial service to follow with the Rev. Gerald R. Kliner Jr. officiating. Inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Stepping Stones, 400 Mylan Park, Morgantown, WV 26501.
