School offers chance for PHS students to earn free college credits

KINGWOOD — Pierpont Community & Technical School is proposing to offer Preston High students the opportunity to earn free college credits while in high school.
Pierpont Vice President for Students Services Lyla Grandstaff said the program is already in place in Monongalia County. It is funded by a grant, so the classes can be offered at no cost to students or the county.
PHS Assistant Principal Pam Wilt said the proposal is for a math teacher at PHS who is also an adjunct professor at Pierpont to teach a class after school from 3:45-4:45 p.m. Students could ride the regular shuttle buses home.
“We can definitely make this work, beginning in August,” Wilt said.
Wilt said 10-15 students are being looked at for the first semester.
“I think it’s an excellent opportunity for our students to gain college credit and also to really get to know what it feels like to take a college course,” she said.
The board expressed support for the plan but asked that the matter be put on its next agenda, so it can take a formal vote. Meanwhile, Wilt is to continue making arrangements to launch the program this fall.
“It sounds to me like we’re opening another door to our kids,” Superintendent Steve Wotring said.
Also at the meeting, the board:
hired Paul Martin as the new principal at Central Preston Middle School and Kathleen McDonald as the new principal at West Preston.
put on hold plans to replace the siding on the board offices behind Preston High. The work was to be done by county workers, but board members Robert “Mac” McCrum and Jack Keim said they wanted the board to have an opportunity to vote on the project.
went into executive session for about 10 minutes to hear from Abigail Shillingburg, who signed up to speak at the meeting. No action was taken after the closed session. In order for action to be taken at a meeting, the matter must be on the agenda.
