BATAVIA, N.Y. — Demetrius Sims’ single in the bottom of the ninth inning July 3 handed Batavia a 5-4 walk-off win against West Virginia.
It was the second walk-off win Batavia scored against the Black Bears in the three-game series.
Trailing, 4-3, Batavia’s Brayan Hernandez, who had three hits, doubled to left field to get things going against reliever John Pomeroy, who came on in the ninth.
After Michael Donadio struck out, Sean Reynolds walked and Albert Guaimaro singled to score Hernandez to tie the game at four.
Pomeroy then intentionally walked Denis Karas to load the bases.
Sims’ single scored Reynolds to win the game.
The shortstop was 2 for 4 with a walk for Batavia (8-9).
Aaron Shortridge started for the Black Bears and went five innings and allowed just one run on three hits, but West Virginia’s bullpen allowed four runs on nine hits.
Pomeroy was charged with his first blown save and his first loss of the season.
The Black Bears (7-11) return home for a three-game series against Williamsport (Pa.), starting at 7 p.m. today.
