MORGANTOWN — A 13-year-old died in a crash Tuesday in Maryland, after authorities report the juvenile was one of five people thrown from an SUV driven by a Morgantown woman.
According to a press release: At about 3 p.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack were dispatched to Interstate 68, just west of Sand Springs Road in Friendsville, Maryland, for a single vehicle rollover on the right shoulder.
Once on scene, troopers began rendering aid until EMS arrived. An investigation revealed that a 2004 Ford Explorer, driven by Crystal Adams, was traveling eastbound on I-68. She lost control of the vehicle, struck an embankment, and rolled over several times. There were five passengers, including four juveniles, in the Explorer. Five of the six occupants were ejected from the vehicle, with four of them seated in the three-person rear seat with no seat belts being used.
A 13-year-old died while being transported to Ruby Memorial. A 12-year-old was flown to Ruby Memorial for-life threatening injuries. All other occupants were ground transported to the hospital. The incident is still under investigation.
Personnel from Friendsville Fire Department, State Highway Administration, and Garrett County Rescue Squad also responded to the scene. If anyone witnessed the accident, contact the McHenry State Police Barracks at 301-387-1101.
