CHARLESTON — Gov. Jim Justice acknowledged Monday President Donald Trump will visit The Greenbrier resort, which the governor owns, this week.
Asked directly about the president’s visit, Justice jokingly denied knowledge.
“I just don’t know anything about it. I mean, really? Really? All of a sudden the president of the United States might be coming to The Greenbrier? Well, wonder, wonder why,” Justice said during a Monday press conference about other issues.
The governor has spoken often about his friendship with Trump.
This week is the PGA golf tournament formerly known as The Greenbrier Classic and now called A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier.
Trump is expected to speak at a dinner this evening, part of the buildup for the tournament.
A press release sent last week by the Governor’s Office indicated Justice spoke with Trump at the White House about issues related to coal and timber.
“He kind of said something to me about maybe coming here tomorrow,” Justice said Monday, adding that the visit was on the agenda for months.
Justice also marveled over a Trump comment. He said Trump told him “West Virginia is the most visited state by the President of the United States than any other state.”
Justice added,” Can you believe it?”
Trump has been a regular visitor to West Virginia, where his popularity remains high.
“When the President of the United States is coming to visit West Virginia, what can come of that but good stuff?” Justice asked.
