WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — The Greenbrier is the first casino in West Virginia to sign on with a sports book to manage sports betting under the state’s new law.
The Greenbrier announced June 26 it finalized an agreement with New York-based FanDuel.
The Greenbrier said its private casino will have sports betting on site and through a mobile app. It hopes to have both services running by this fall.
“We are honored to be chosen to provide sports wagering services at The Greenbrier, an iconic resort in the U.S.,” FanDuel CEO Matt King said in a news release. “As we work towards building out a top sports betting product for the upcoming NFL season, we look forward to bringing West Virginia residents, sports fans, and visitors to The Greenbrier the best interactive sports experience on the market.”
FanDuel was founded in 2009.
“We’re excited to be able to offer this service to those guests who are interested,” said Dr. Jill Justice, president of The Greenbrier. “The Casino Club at The Greenbrier has been an attractive destination for our guests and members since its opening, and sports betting provides yet another element to the casino experience.”
The other four casinos operating in West Virginia — in Nitro, Charles Town, Wheeling and Chester — are also negotiating with sports book operations. They will be constructing sports book rooms, where betting would take place and where fans could watch games comfortably, as well as developing apps that would be used off-site.
The West Virginia Lottery Commission passed rules and regulations for sports betting last week; the Legislature passed the bill into law this year. The new law got the final boost it needed when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on a New Jersey case that will basically allow individual states to decide whether to have sports betting.
