AUBURN, N.Y. — Ricardo Mendez scored the decisive run on an error in the second inning, as the Auburn Doubledays beat the West Virginia Black Bears, 3-2, in the second game of a doubleheader Monday June 25.
Mendez scored after he led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third.
The error by Canning scored Mendez to give the Doubledays a 3-2 lead.
Connor Zwetsch struck Edison Lantigua out with runners on first and third to end the game for his second save of the season.
In the bottom of the first, Auburn scored on a single by Jamori Blash that brought home Adalberto Carrillo. Later in the inning, West Virginia’s catcher allowed a passed ball to give the Doubledays a
2-0 lead. West Virginia answered in the next half-inning when Felix Vinicio drew a bases-loaded walk and Michael De La Cruz hit a sacrifice fly.
Jhonatan German (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief while Nicholas Economos (0-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game.

Francys Peguero and Frankie Bartow combined for a shutout as the Auburn Doubledays the Black Bears in the first game. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Doubledays and a five-game winning streak for the Black Bears.
Bartow (1-0) picked up the win after he struck out one over two scoreless innings. Alex Manasa (1-1) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits in the New York-Penn League game. He also struck out two and walked two.
All four runs came in the sixth inning. Auburn got on the board first when Gage Canning scored on a single by Jamori Blash. The Doubledays added to their lead when Israel Pineda hit a two-run single and then scored on an error.
The Black Bears were held off the scoreboard for the first time this season, while the Doubledays’ staff also registered their first shutout of the year.
