CHARLESTON — English instructor Adrin Fisher of Fairmont Senior High School is among five finalists for the 2019 State Teacher of the Year award.
The West Virginia Department of Education praised Fisher for “striving to impart a love of learning in diverse ways,” by developing a detailed system that gauges students’ interests to build relationships.”
She encourages civic engagement among her students, and one endeavor raised $10,000 for the humanitarian organization Nuru International over several years.
The state teacher of the year will be revealed Sept. 12 in Charleston.
The remaining finalists are:
- Summer McClintock, fourth-grade teacher at Pleasant View Elementary School in Hedgesville;
- Jada Reeves, fifth-grade teacher at Bradley Elementary School in Beckley;
- Clifford Sullivan, fifth-grade teacher at Mount Hope Elementary School in Mount Hope;
- Joy Van Scyoc, rotational art teacher at Moundsville Middle School in Moundsville.
“These finalists understand that great teaching comes from profound caring,” said West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steven Paine. “They care enough to invest in their own professional growth to implement innovation in the classroom and to ignite a passion for learning within their students.”
Katlin Thorsell, an agriculture teacher at Washington High School in Charles Town, was the state’s 2018 winner.
