NILES, Ohio — Gabriel Mejia hit a sacrifice fly and drove in Hosea Nelson with the winning run in the 10th inning, as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers beat the West Virginia Black Bears 9-8 on Friday June 15.
Nelson scored the game-winning run after he reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a hit batsman and then went to third on a wild pitch.
The play capped an improbable comeback for the Scrappers, who scored three runs in the inning for the win. Mitch Reeves scored on a wild pitch earlier in the inning to help set the stage for the game-winning score.
The Scrappers scored three runs in the ninth before West Virginia answered with two in the next half-inning to take an 8-6 lead.
Luis Santos (1-0) got the win in relief while Francis Del Orbe (0-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game.
Several Black Bears chipped in at the plate, as five players had at least a pair of hits.
