James George Ponceroff Sr “Jim”, 75, of Core, went home to be with Jesus on June 2, 2018. He was born September 20, 1942. He was the son of George “Cookie” Ponceroff and Julia Shultz Ponceroff.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart, his wife of 56 years, Marlena May McCord Ponceroff; son and daughter-in-law, James Jr and Carol Poncerof,f of Cassville; daughter and son-in-law, Jodie and Mike Mull, of Taylors, S.C.; along with seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and siblings Barbara Dower, of Morgantown, William Ponceroff, of Fairmont, Diana Smith, of Waynesburg and Rudy Ponceroff, of Cassville.
He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron Ponceroff.
At age 18, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies, as a pitcher, for $25,000; he played minor league baseball for six years. He was a retired coal miner from Arkwright Mine and was also on the mine rescue team.
His passions included, gardening, fishing, hunting and his favorite was golfing. He especially enjoyed the Friday morning scrambles at Mountaineer Golf Course, where he was loved and admired by many. He had 7 hole-in-ones.
His wishes were for his body to be donated to science followed by cremation. He was hopeful they could learn something to help others in the future.
There will be no service, as he requested.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church in Westover, WV Pastor Kevin Caine.
