MORGANTOWN — Area players were widely represented on the boys’ and girls’ West Virginia Scholastic Lacrosse Association (WVSLA) all-state teams.
The University High boys’ team, which won the state championship for the second straight year, had five members on the Division I first team: Midfielders Mathias Turner and Quinn Napolillo, attacker Antonio Mascaro, defender Andrew Phillips and long stick midfielder Riley McCord.
On the second team, midfielder Sam Snider and attacker Nate Gibson represented the Hawks. Goalie A.J. Adams, face-off Reis Snider, defensive midfielder Ben McChesney, midfielders Nick Kirchoff and Jacob Stahl, attackers Gavin Yondura and Brayden Wilson, defender Garrett Huebsch and long stick midfielder Andrew Phillips were honorable mentions.
Morgantown, which got to the state semifinals, was represented by defender Robbie Kurth on the first team. Midfielder Noah Yohn and team specialist Riley Kane were on the second team. Hazen Powell, and attackers Cody Calvert Nate Goldcamp were honorable mentions.
The UHS girls’ team fell in the state title game, to George Washington, but had four first-team all-state players: Midfielders Sophie Armstrong and Mackenzie Slavensky, attacker Mallory Napolillo and goalie Riley Phares.
The Hawks had midfielder Olivia Wills, attacker Jordyn Snider and defender Alexa Mascaro on the second team. Defenders Logan White, Brooke Lowery and Annabella Kuehn were honorable mentions.
MHS, which lost to UHS in the semifinals, was also well represented with six first-teamers: Attackers Kylie Bennett and Madison Sharpe, midfielders Jordan Weiss, Emily Verbosky and
Mia Wilson, and defender Maddie Shaffer.On the second team were attacker Maddie Bal, defender Hannah Deeley and goalie Madison Adkins. Honorable mentions were midfielder Gianna DeVincent, defenders Lauren Adamec, Teila Peggoes and Molly Wiles, and goalie Patricia Fahey.
In boys’ Division II, Preston had three on the first team: Attacker Dakota Holt, midfielder David Reckart and defender Jacob DeVall.
On the second team, the Knights had attacker Jaron Summers and specialist Nate Pompili. Long stick midfielder Nathan Grogg was an honorable mention.
For the PHS girls, Monica Bowers was a first-team defender. Midfielders Hannah Rosenberger and Kaylee Tennant were on the second team, while midfielder Jamie Shaffer, attacker Carlee Casteel, goalie Emilie Roth and defender Madison Crane were honorable mentions.
The WVSLA all-star games are June 2, at East-West Stadium, in Fairmont. The girls’ game will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the boys’ game, at 3 p.m.
