KINGWOOD — A Kingwood man was given one year in jail and two years probation Wednesday for stabbing another man.
Kenneth Ray Brown Jr, 54, was charged with unlawful assault for stabbing Dean Sean Sullivan on June 2, 2017, as the victim took a shower.
“This is the longest rap sheet I have ever seen,” Senior Status Judge Larry Starcher told Brown as he went through information about the case. He added that most of it had taken place in California prior to Brown moving to Preston County.
Preston Prosecuting Attorney Melvin Snyder told the court the state was not making recommendations. “I believe if the defendant wanted to kill him (Sullivan) he would have killed him. I believe he was angry about the situation and cut his arm,” Snyder said.
Brown was originally charged with attempted murder. Under a plea agreement the charge was dropped to felony unlawful assault. Brown waived his indictment by a grand jury
Brown’s attorney, Kristen Antolini, said Brown had been in jail since June 2017 and asked that he be released on June 2, 2018.
“Is he old enough to stop beating up people?” Starcher asked. “I can understand the why, but there’s no reason to pull a knife on anyone.”
Antolini told the court her client had substantial family support. She said that was his reason for moving back to West Virginia.
Starcher sentenced Brown to 12 months in jail with credit for time served and two years probation. He told Brown he is no longer allowed to carry a knife.
