WVU roundup: 5 Mountaineers to run at NCAA track regional

MORGANTOWN — Seven members of the WVU track and field team qualified for the NCAA outdoor East preliminary regionals, May 24-26, in Tampa, Fla.
Redshirt seniors Amy Cashin and Jillian Forsey, senior Sara Finfrock, redshirt junior Madelin Gardner and redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill all ranked in the top 48 of the NCAA East Region in their specialties.
Redshirt senior Maggie Drazba (10,000 meters) and junior Danique Bryan (long jump, triple jump) qualified but cannot participate due to injury.
Cashin qualified to run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She earned a school-record time of 9:59.40 at the Penn Relays.
Gardner and Finfrock will compete in the pole vault. Gardner broke her own school record at the Virginia Challenge, jumping 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.5 inches), while Finfrock had a season-best jump of 4.02 meters (13-2.25), at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
Hill and Forsey will run the 10,000 meters. Hill’s best time this season was 34:47.73, at the Stanford Invitational, while Forsey’s top time came at the Virginia Challenge (35:21.96).
Those who place in the top eight at regionals will advance to the NCAA championships, June 6-9, in Eugene, Ore.
ACADEMICS
Five Mountaineers were named to the Google Cloud academic all-District 2 at-large teams, as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Junior Will Anti (rifle) was named to the men’s team. Seniors Amelie Currat (swimming and diving) and Elizabeth Gratz (rifle), and juniors Paula Goetz (tennis) and Ginny Thrasher (rifle), landed on the women’s team.
They advanced to the Google Cloud academic all-America ballot, with winners to be announced in June.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the match-ups for the annual Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase, on Dec. 16, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
The tripleheader will feature Rhode Island (Atlantic 10) versus WVU (Big 12), Tulsa (American Athletic) versus Dayton (Atlantic 10) and Drexel (Colonial Athletic) versus Quinnipiac (Metro Atlantic).
Tickets will go on sale Sept. 7, at Ticketmaster outlets.
