MORGANTOWN — The pedestrian bridge crossing Deckers Creek is almost in place.
On Wednesday May 9, a crane and the two sections of the bridge were brought to the area underneath the Walnut Street Bridge, where the span will be placed.
Crews welded the pieces together Thursday May 10, and then tested those welds to make sure the bridge would hold up.
Today May 11, “the crane will lift the bridge into place,” said Andrew Stacy, communications manager for the City of Morgantown. “The remaining work includes finalizing installation and completing the entrances to the bridge. It is expected to be open to the public in late June.”
The cost of the bridge is $458,216. Funds from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) will help pay for it, including $85,450 in design costs and $282,766 of the administration, inspection and construction costs. The remaining $90,000 will be covered by the city.
“This project was identified in the Morgantown Pedestrian Safety Plan as one that would improve residents’ walking and biking and will help make Greenmont a more transportation friendly neighborhood,” Stacy said.
“Alpha Associates has been doing design and inspection work and Green Rivers Group, LLC has done the preliminary work (clearing vegetation, and drilling caissons), and they are doing the installation.”
