WELLSBURG — Morgantown High’s boys’ and girls’ track teams both won regional championships May 10, at Brooke.
The Mohigans’ girls squeezed past Wheeling Park, 139 points to 132, with John Marshall (90) coming in third, University (78) in fourth, Buckhannon-Upshur (48) in fifth, Preston (35) in sixth and Brooke (33) in seventh.
The MHS boys dominated their meet, running up 226 points and nearly doubling the total of second-place Wheeling Park (117). Brooke (74), Preston (57), Buckhannon-Upshur (56), John Marshall (14) and University (13) round out the seven-team field.
Individual results weren’t available late Thursday. Look for them in a future edition.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
University 13, Linsly 5: The top-seeded Hawks opened the state Division 1 playoffs with a an easy win. UHS rolled to a 4-0 lead after a quarter and an 8-1 edge at halftime.
Seniors Antonio Mascarao and Quinn Napolillo each collected three goals on the night, and Gavin Yondura and Mathias Turner added two goals apiece.
Nate Gibson, Brayden Wilson and Riley McCord had one goal each.
Nate Gibson was credited with three assists and Napolillo with two. Turner and Jacob Stahl had one assist each.
Keeper A.J. Adams had four saves in the fourth quarter and totaled six for the game.
This year, semifinal games and the state championship are being held at Morgantown High School. UHS will play the winner of the Berkeley County-Wheelling Central Catholic game, scheduled for Saturday night. This semifinal game will be on May 17, with the state final May 19.
BASEBALL
University 10, Buckhannon-Upshur 9: The Hawks edged the Bucs in the loser’s bracket final and now get a shot — and maybe two — at capturing the sectional crown today, against Morgantown.
UHS and MHS are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. today. If the Mohigans win, they’ll advance to regional play. If the Hawks win, they’ll force a decisive final game for the championship.
No other information about the game was available late Thursday.
SOFTBALL
University 6, Clay-Battelle 2: With more than a week off between their sectional and regional playoffs, the Hawks and Cee-Bees got up a game. UHS’s Yasmine Colebank slugged two doubles and drove in a pair of runs in the victory.
Hayden Powroznik pitched 4 1/3 innings to gett he win, and collected two hits and an RBI. Layne Assif had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Hawks.
Rylee Burnette and Madison Statler each had two of C-B’s five hits.
