Bird walks, workshops at the botanic garden

MORGANTOWN — Take a look at the spring flowers that are coloring the grounds of the West Virginia Botanic Garden (WVBG) at Tibbs Run Preserve, at 1061 Tyrone Road.
The gate to the lower parking lot will be open for scheduled events and on weekends and some holidays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., when volunteers are available and the weather is agreeable. The garden is open dawn to dusk and admission is free, but donations are welcome.

At 10 a.m. May 4, join educator Stacy Clovis-Woofter for the monthly Friday Family Walk. The walk will begin with a short story and conclude with a simple craft. All ages welcome. Free.

Join local birder David Daniels for an early morning bird walk at 7:30 a.m. May 5. Bring binoculars if you have them. All ages are welcome to this free event.

Also on Saturday, at 1 p.m., educator Stacy Clovis-Woofter will lead a make-and-take workshop for children ages 4 and older who are accompanied by an adult. Children will decorate a garden pot filled with spring flowers and a card for mom, grandma, aunt or a special friend in honor of Mother’s Day. They will learn about West Virginia’s Anna Jarvis, who organized the first Mother’s Day. Cost is $10 for WVBG members per child, $15 for non-members.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, participate in an Herbal First Aid Workshop led by Jen-Osha Buysse and Hannah Spencer with the nonprofit organization The Mountain Stewardship and Outdoor Leadership School (SOL).
This is an introductory workshop about medicinal herbs focusing on some basic components in our herbal first aid kits including tinctures, salves, and dried plants. Some students from SOL will share stories of using their first aid kits in real life scenarios. Each participant will take home supplies for their own herbal first aid kit.
A portion of the proceeds from this class will support the Mountain SOL School’s scholarship fund. For more information on The Mountain SOL School, visit mountainsol.org. Cost is $20 for WVBG members, $30 for non-members.
Visit wvbg.org for details and to register, or call 304-322-2093. Refrain from bringing pets to scheduled events.
