MORGANTOWN — After a pair of weather delays pushed Morgantown High’s girls’ lacrosse home finale back nearly two hours, University High was able to best its Mohigans rivals and league leaders, 7-4, April 27, at Pony Lewis Field, to tie the season series
Morgantown (12-2) took a 1-0 lead with a goal by senior Kylie Bennett at the 17-minute mark, right before both teams were forced back into the locker room for the second weather delay.
After waiting out Mother Nature for a second half hour, the Hawks (12-3) roared back with three consecutive goals. Two came from sophomore Mallory Napolillo, who finished with a hat trick on the night, and the third from junior Sophie Armstrong, to take a 3-1 lead midway through the first half.
Morgantown retaliated with a score from senior Mia Wilson, and schools then swapped goals from seniors Maddie Bal, for MHS, and McKenzie Slavensky, for University, to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Hawks netted two early goals, from senior Olivia Wills and a second from Slavensky, at the 16- and 17-minute marks to double up Morgantown’s output and lead, 6-3.
Late in the game, Napolillo all but sealed the win for University with her game-leading third score, while the Mohigans’ Bennett snuck in her second goal on the night less than two minutes before the final buzzer sounded the Hawks’ victory.
Both Morgantown and University will return to action Tuesday. The Mohigans will travel to Fairmont Senior (12-2) for an 8 p.m. start and University will host St. Albans (5-8) at 6:30 p.m.
