WHEELING — The University High boys’ tennis team claimed two doubles Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) championships April 25, at West Liberty University.
No. 1 doubles, made up of brothers Drew Hawthorne and Kyle Hawthorne, beat Morgantown’s Ben Rosiello and Ataes Aggarwal, 8-6, in the title match.
“It was an excellent match,” UHS head coach Tim McClellan said. “Both teams really fought hard.”
UHS’s No. 2 doubles team of Jackson Rutledge and Jameson Walters lost to Wheeling Park,
8-4, in the title match.
However, No. 3 doubles team of Levi Watson and Deiland Slaughter beat East Liverpool (Ohio),
8-2, to win the OVAC title.
“It was a great start for UHS tennis with a five game lead on the field to start OVACs,” McClellan said. “They’ve had a positive attitude, and I’m really proud of the No. 3 doubles. They’ve really gelled as a team.”
The tournament continues April 24, with the boys’ singles.
