Sophie (Kurcaba) Matuszny, 92, of Venice, Fla., peacefully passed away on April 12, 2018, at her home under the care of her son and hospice.
Sophie was born near Morgantown, the second daughter of eight children, in a small coal mining town. After graduating high school, she moved to Cleveland, where she later met and then married John Matuszny on July 1, 1950. They were married for 59 years until John’s death in 2010.
Sophie was a homemaker for the most part, but also worked side by side on many of her husband’s projects. She very much enjoyed walking and working on jigsaw puzzles. Sophie and John also traveled extensively, many times to Poland, where relatives were in need. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her drive and fortitude, and of course her baking skills.
Sophie is survived by her son, Ron; her sister Stella; two grandchildren; and numerous relatives, both home and abroad.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Frank; and six siblings. Her brothers and sister were Stanley (Jock), Joe (Jughead), Nellie, Walter (Molly), George (Corky), and John (Yonk).
The funeral service will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, with Father Joe Hudson, Chaplain of Tidewell Hospice officiating. Various Roman Catholic Masses will also be said in her honor in America as well as in Poland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to local hospice organizations.
