MORGANTOWN — The heavy rains late Sunday and early Monday caused havoc in counties south and east of Monongalia, while Mon itself fared somewhat better.
MECCA 911 reported a few fender benders around the county but no weather-related accidents or incidents.
Elsewhere, flooding closed Interstate 79 at Jane Lew, in Lewis County. Gov. Jim Justice declared a state of emergency for 10 counties:
Barbour, Braxton, Gilmer, Lewis, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, Tucker, Upshur and Webster
As of Monday afternoon, state and county emergency officials were evacuating some of the locations affected by high waters, and the State Emergency Operations Center was activated and coordinating with officials in the areas to determine their needs, according to a release form the governor. The West Virginia Army National Guard was put on stand-by to assist.
For the Morgantown area, the heavy rain will end, but snow flurries were expected overnight into today, with below-average temperatures prevailing through the end of the week, AccuWeather meteorologist Carl Erickson said.
Today’s temperatures should be in the lower 40s, Erickson said, instead of their typical 63-64. Gusty winds will add to the chill.
Wednesday will moderate a bit, rising into the lower 60s. Late Wed-nesday into early Thursday, a few showers may move through. Behind that should come cool air keeping temperatures through Friday in the upper 40s and lower 50s.
From late Sunday into Monday, Morgantown got 2.42 inches of rain, he said, with 2-3 inches across the northern part of the state.
