Roberta “Birdie” L. Jackson, 65, of Fairmont, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Dec. 20, 1952, in Buffalo, N.Y., daughter to the late Howard and Marie Flora.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 33 years, Leonard Jackson, of Fairmont; beloved daughter, Lauren Jackson, of Morgantown; fur-babies, Knox and Mister Mistoffelees; brother, Ted and Lorraine Flora, of San Diego; uncle Homer “Bud” Flora, of Mobile, Ala.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice Woods-Brown, Norma Cottingham, Shirley Cottingham, Charles “Sharon” Jackson and Kenneth “Diane” Jackson; a whole host of nieces and nephews, too many to mention; loving friends of 40 years, Maryanna and David Brookman; and many, many friends and co-workers.
She graduated from West Virginia University with a master’s degree in social work. She was a devoted, hardworking advocate in the field of mental health. She retired in 2016 from the Behavioral Medicine Unit at Fairmont General Hospital, after 17 years of dedicated service. Previous employers were Apogee Integrated Mental Health Services Inc., Valley Mental Health, Chestnut Ridge Center, Morgan Manor, Scott’s Run Settlement House and the Presbyterian Child Development Center.
Birdie was a petite, spunky lady who loved Starbucks, good food, great wine, travel, shopping and socializing with her family and friends. She was known for her bright smile, infectious laugh, unique style and that unforgettable phrase, “God love ya!”
Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11.
