Man pleads guilty to wanton endangerment

MORGANTOWN — Cody Lewis, a 22-year-old Maryland native, pleaded guilty to wanton endangerment with a firearm on March 26 for his role in a May 7, 2017 attack.

Monongalia County Circuit Court Judge Susan Tucker accepted Lewis’ plea, which reduced the original charges of malicious assault (2-10 years), conspiracy (1-5 years) and daytime burglary (1-10 years) to the single felony charge.

According to West Virginia code, wanton endangerment with a firearm is punishable by one to five years in prison, or, at the discretion of the judge, not more than one year in county jail, or a fine of at least $250 and not more than $2,500.

Lewis will undergo a pre-sentencing investigation and random drug screening through a probation officer. As Lewis is residing in Maryland, Tucker said he could potentially satisfy those requirements without traveling to Monongalia County.

According to The Dominion Post archives and information shared Monday by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Brandon Benchoff, Lewis, Cody Aaron Beavers and Ricki Antonucci forced their way into a South Eastern Drive apartment on May 7, 2017. Once inside a pistol was brandished and subsequently used to strike the inhabitant multiple times, causing severe head wounds.

Lewis is the last of the defendants to plead.

Sentencing was scheduled for May 21.
