MORGANTOWN — Hundreds packed into the West Virginia National Guard Morgantown Readiness Center on March 22 for the beginning of the semi-annual Morgantown Children’s Consignment Sale.
More than 30,000 children’s items were available for sale at discounted prices, ranging from spring and summer clothing to toys, baby furniture and other children’s accessories.
“Families can come and shop for their children, their grandchildren, and their nieces and nephews,” said Cheryl Callen, director of Christian Help. “It’s just a great community event.”
The sale started the morning of March 22 and runs until early afternoon on March 24. On March 23, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on March 24 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. However, many of the remaining children’s items will be marked half-off on March 24.
All the items that aren’t sold by the end of the sale on Saturday are either taken back by the consigners or given to Christian Help, where they are given away to families in need.
“Other families who can’t afford to come to this sale can come to Christian Help next week and get beautiful clothes and other items for their children at no cost,” Callen said.
The Children’s Consignment Sale was first started in 2010 by a group of moms in Morgantown that wanted to provide a place for families to buy quality children’s merchandise at a discounted cost.
Approximately 150 families have consigned items for this year’s sale, which is the most ever for the event. The consigned items typically range from new to slightly used.
“We have consigners that consign their items and they receive a certain percentage based on how much they volunteer (at the sale), and then the rest goes to Christian Help,” said Kellen Falkenstine, who helped organize this year’s event.
