BECKLEY — Morgantown High let most of a big lead slip away Feb. 1 but held on to beat Woodrow Wilson, 56-52, in the girls’ Big Atlantic Classic basketball tournament.
The Mohigans (12-5) bolted to a 17-4 lead after a period and upped it to 38-21 by halftime.
“Hey, we had a great first half,” MHS coach Jason White said. “We came out with a lot of energy, got a lot of deflections, had 19 steals for the game. That seemed to disappear in the third quarter. We were scrambling to hold on at the end. We had to make a few foul shots down the end to hold them at bay.”
Morgantown survived a 27-point effort by Woodrow’s Laken Bill and 17 from Victoria Staunton with balanced scoring.
Sydni Clawges and Kaitlyn Ammons tallied 12 points apiece, Aleena McDaniel scored 11 and Aliyssa Neal added 10.
MHS next plays the winner of Thursday’s late game between Greenbrier East and Hedges-ville at 7:20 p.m. Saturday.
Preston 66, Robert C. Byrd 42: KINGWOOD — A defensive change early in the game propelled the Knights to victory.
Preston (11-7) trailed, 10-8, when, “We switched to a ‘man’ and the second quarter, you can see, we kind of blew it open,” coach Brian Miller said.
Leading, 18-10, after a period, the Knights ran the lead to 35-17 by halftime.
Makenzie Friend led Preston with 21 points and Kirsten Brown netted 13. The Knights next play Tuesday, at North Marion.
