Prep roundup: Trinity, Morgantown girls lose

PARKERSBURG — Wheeling Central Catholic scored the last eight points of the girls’ basketball game Jan. 25 to pull away from Trinity Christian in a 62-44 win.

“We played ’em really tough, they’re a good team,” Trinity coach Mike Baldy said of the 14-2 Maroon Knights. “I know they scored eight in the final minute to make it look a little different than it actually was. We were with them the whole game, and pretty happy with the way we played.”

Reagan Sharp scored 17 points, Emily Saurborn 16 and Rachel Rosen 10 for the Warriors (7-7), who play Saturday, at Moorefield.

Hannah White had a game-high 22 points and Taylor Duplaga 19 to lead Wheeling Central.

Parkersburg South 54, Morgantown 42: PARKERSBURG — The Patriots (11-3) surged to a 17-7 lead after a quarter and didn’t let up inbeating the Mohigans (10-5), in a makeup game.

“They really came out of the locker room with much more intensity and a greater effort from the jump,” MHS coach Jason White said. “I thought we were struggling to find that all night.”

Aleena McDaniel, with 11 points, was the only player in double figures for MHS.

Devin Hefner netted 16 points, Allie Taylor scored 14 and Makenna Winans tallied 13 for Parkersburg South.

“We have to learn from it and get ready to go again in 48 hours because we’re going to play a good Martinsburg team at home on Saturday,” White said.

Clay-Battelle 35, Valley Wetzel 31: PINE GROVE — The Cee-Bees were led by a dominant rebounding performance by Autumn Stewart late Wednesday, at Valley Wetzel. Stewart pulled down 22 boards, including 13 offensively. Rylee Burnette led the scoring, with 16 points. Defensively, C-B had 13 steals, led by Abbey Ammons, with five.

C-B (8-5) will host Paden City at 6 p.m. today, in the WVHIT.

JV GIRLS

Morgantown 62, Parkersburg South 42: Gracie Haines paced the Mohigans (11-0) with 22 points, Paige Dixon added 16 and Savanna Dews had 10.

FRESHMAN BOYS

Morgantown 51, University 45: Luke Bechtel scored 14 points and Johnner McConnell 10 to spark the Mohigans (7-0). The Hawks (6-9) got 14 points from Dane Gibson and 11 from Hayden Chase.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS

Mountaineer 7s 37, Washington Irving 20: Ashlyn Weaver paced the Mounties (11-1) with 22 points.

Mountaineer 8s 59, Washington Irving 14: Lauren Dean led the Mounties (13-0) with 23 points and Ella Simpson added 10.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS

East Fairmont 8s 47, Westwood 33: Aaron Forbes netted 23 points to lead the Warriors. Brayden Swecker topped East Fairmont with 10.

South 7s 39, West Fairmont 30: Sabastian Dalton and Koma Neal netted nine points each to lead the Stallions to victory.

South 8s 46, West Fairmont 44: Alec Poland tallied 20 points and 19 rebounds and and Brooks Gage 13 for the Stallions (6-2). Zycheus Dobbs had 16 points for West Fairmont.

Central Preston 49, East Preston 19: Mason Sargent netted 11 points and Tanner Haskiell 10 for the Wildcats (12-3). Colin Reeves led the Eagles with six.

WRESTLING

Point Pleasant 29, University 27; East Fairmont 44
University 27: FAIRMONT — The Hawks dropped matches to the No. 2 (East Fairmont) and No. 3 (Point Pleasant) ranked teams in Class AA late Wednesday.

“A disappointing night overall,” UHS coach Ken Maisel called it.

He got two wins each from Jake Staud (120 pounds), Braeden Pauley (138) and Ben Gribble (220).

University 39, Wheeling Park 30: The Hawks (16-3), ranked No. 3 in Class AAA, bounced back with a victory against the No. 4-ranked Patriots. Gribble’s pin at 285 pounds sealed the victory.

“We wrestled much better,” Maisel said. “It was actually a kind of a fun night. We had a bunch of alumni back. We also honored both middle schools, Mountaineer and Westwood, they’re both doing a good job.”

Other UHS winners were Jace Stockett (106 pounds), Calvin Matthews (113), Staud (120), Jacob Simpson (126) by fall, Pauley (138), Owen Zeiders (152) by fall, and Josh Rudmann (160).

UHS wrestles at North Marion on Wednesday, then hosts Class AAA No. 2 Huntington, on Feb. 2.
