WVU roundup: Women’s hoops team faces Kansas

MORGANTOWN — The No. 15-ranked WVU women’s basketball team is in Lawrence, Kan., Jan. 10 to face the Kansas Jayhawks in Big 12 action. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., on ESPN3 (online).

The Mountaineers (14-2, 2-2 Big 12) ended a two-game skid with a 57-49 win over Iowa State, at the WVU Coliseum, on Sunday. Junior guard Naomi Davenport collected her fourth double-double of the season, with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Davenport averages 19.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in Big 12 play to lead WVU in scoring.

Senior forward Teana Mul-drow just missed a double-double with a team-high 14 rebounds and nine points.

The Mountaineers and the Jayhawks meet for the 13th time, with WVU bringing an 8-4 series lead into the game.

K.U. (11-4, 2-2) won seven straight to start the season. Most recently, the Jayhawks fell to Baylor, at home, 83-48.

Junior guard Christalah Lyons leads the way with 14.8 points per game, followed by junior guard Kylee Kopatich (14.7 ppg). Junior forward Austin Richardson boasts a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Coach Bob Huggins is once again competing in the Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge, against 47 other basketball coaches nationwide, all vying for the opportunity to raise money for their favorite charities.

Each vote helps Huggins advance closer to the $100,000 grand prize to benefit the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment at the WVU Cancer Institute.

WRESTLING

WVU’s Zeke Moisey (125 pounds) posted his fourth straight dual-match win to move up in the national rankings, as announced by wrestling publications FloWrestling, Intermat and The Open Mat.

Moisey is No. 14 via The Open Mat and No. 16 in both FloWrestling and Intermat’s rankings at 125 pounds, moving up four spots in FloWrestling’s top 20 as well as three spots in Intermat’s.

Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith (197) is ranked No. 12 by FloWrestling, appears at No. 13 according to Intermat and checks in at No. 15 via The Open Mat.

After notching two upset wins over ranked opponents in Big 12 play last week, the Mountaineers (3-3, 2-1 Big 12) sneaked in at No. 25 in Intermat’s Dual Meet top 25.

WVU will travel to Stillwater, Okla., for a match against No. 3 Oklahoma State on Jan. 19, then wrestle at Iowa State on Jan. 21.
