MORGANTOWN — Two local teams are poised to earn bids to the WVSSAC football playoffs, according to newest state rankings released this week.
The University Hawks sit at third in the Class AAA rankings, guaranteed a playoff spot and home field advantage in the first round. The Hawks sit a perfect 10-0 on the year, and will have a bye week to close out the regular season.
UHS is coming off a 38-19 win against rival Morgantown.
MHS also has cause to celebrate. The Mohigans sit at 15th in the rankings, despite their 4-6 mark. The Mohigans benefited from a tough regular-season schedule, helping secure points in the rankings. Unfortunately, MHS also has the week off from competition, which will prevent it from gaining further ground.
However, Riverside, also finished for the year, sits in 17th, so Morgantown should likely be secure in the top 16, even if it falls to the final spot. Morgantown is on a three-game losing streak.
Clay-Battelle may not be as fortunate as the AAA teams in the region, however. The Cee-Bees, fixtures in the Class A top 16 since the rankings were first published following Week 3, made their departure.
C-B, reeling from a 34-20 loss against Notre Dame, enters this week’s rankings at 19th. Pocahontas County and Tyler Consolidated sit above the Cee-Bees, tied for in the elusive 16th spot. C-B will host No. 9 Madonna this weekend, and needs a win to have a chance at earning a playoff bid.
